Översättare: Anders Wahlström Hemsida: www.mampam.com Presentation of Daniel BennetNationalitet: England Daniel Bennett was born in the small town of Glossop in England, U.K. He left school at 16 his first job was as a trainee gravedigger at Willesden Green Cemetery, followed by a variety of other professions that allowed him frequent admission to the library of the Natural History Museum. His first experiences of field research were with the Soviet Institute of Nature Conservation (Desert Biosphere Division) in Repetek, Turkmenistan, and as field Research Assistant to Eric Pianka in the Great Victoria Desert of Western Australia. At the age of 25 he resumed his education and obtained a degree in zoology from Aberdeen University and a Phd from Leeds University. His research activities have included developing novel survey techniques for lizards, amphibian, bat and hippopotamus populations and his study sites have been mainly in threatened and neglected areas of exceptionally high diversity in India, Madagascar, Ghana and the Philippines. His major interests involve monitor lizards; studies include population assessments and baseline ecology of exploited populations of savannah monitors and an ongoing 11 year project investigating the giant frugivorous monitor lizards of the Philippines and their roles as seed dispersers. His books include A Little Book of Monitor Lizards (1995, consequently reprinted in German as Warane der Welt, Welt der Warane), Frogs of Coorg (1998), Guide to Field techniques for Reptiles and Amphibians (1999), Bats of Madagascar, (2001)) and Savannah Monitors; The Truth about Varanus exanthematicus (2004), together with numerous multimedia guides, short articles in journals, magazines and newspapers and collaboration on a number of documentaries. He has promised his sponsors at least four major papers, to be submitted to journals by the end of this year. The work of which he is most proud is as leader of the Bui Hippo Project Team, which collected the only independent biodiversity surveys in Bui National Park before the area was inundated by a controversial hydro-electric project. His only pets are a pair of Synodontis catfish that he has owned for over 30 years. He raised his daughter (now 18) in Glossop, and still lives there.
